Great Falls Park, Northern Virginia

One of the amazing opportunities living in the United States of America affords us is the U.S. Parks Services. In Northern Virginia one of my favorite places to visit is the Great Falls Park just outside of the 495 beltway and a few miles from Tysons Corner. I just returned a few hours ago from a visit to the Park I enjoyed with my family and my friends and their children. Be prepared to pay a small fee for entry, the beauty of nature and the falls on the Potomac River are worth the fee.
The park has many over looks to choose from to see the falls and a few that may be discovered by venturing out on one’s own. There are plenty of picnic benches and a few grills to bring lunch and make a day of it. The park has many trails to hike and enjoy some peace and quiet or to just find a quite spot to read. There are no playgrounds for children to play on but natures own jungle gym of rocks to clime and explore. With space galore a yard game like Bocce Ball is good or just bring a football or Frisbee. No trip to the park would be complete without your best friend, just be sure to keep him on a leash. I will not give you a lesson but there is Great Falls Virginia history, not to be confused with the smaller Great Falls Maryland, check out the visitors center for more information or to just get an ice cream.
I will pass on a bit of advice from experience when visiting the park. The park becomes very full on those beautiful weekend days so leave early to avoid sitting in traffic. I have found that if I arrive by 10:30 am entry is easy and there are plenty of picnic tables and grills to claim.
